How to use this calculator

Enter your normal hourly rate, your contracted hours per week, the overtime hours you work each week, and the multiplier your contract pays (1.5 for time and a half, 2 for double time). The overtime rate, weekly overtime pay and annual totals update instantly.

Worked example: at £15 an hour, 5 overtime hours on time and a half pays £15 × 1.5 × 5 = £112.50 extra a week, or about £487.50 a month and £5,850 a year on top of regular pay.

How overtime pay works in the UK

There is no legal requirement for employers to pay a higher rate for overtime — UK law only requires that your average pay across all hours worked doesn’t fall below the National Minimum Wage. Enhanced rates like time and a half (1.5×) or double time (2×) come from your contract, not statute.

Overtime pay = hourly rate × multiplier × overtime hours.

Overtime and tax

Overtime isn’t taxed at a special rate — it’s simply added to your gross pay and taxed through PAYE like the rest of your earnings. A big overtime month can push you into a higher band temporarily, but the annual figures even out across the tax year.

The Working Time Regulations also limit most workers to an average 48-hour week (including overtime) unless you’ve signed an opt-out.
